If you’re looking for a great location for your next family photo shoot, here are some things that I like to think about – and you should too!

1. Lighting… this is almost always one of my first considerations when it comes to picking a location. Sure, there are lots of pretty spots you may see as you drive around town, but after almost a decade of doing this, I can tell you that no matter how cool a location looks… if the lighting is bad, you’re not going to love the photos. Having a photographer who really understands this, and can find good light is KEY!

2. Accessibility – okay, so this one totally depends on your family! If you have young children and will be either carrying them or pushing a stroller… you’re going to want something pretty easy to get to! But, if you’re more of the adventurous type who doesn’t mind a bit of a hike and scrambling over some rocks to get to a stunning location that is off the beaten path… then do that!!

3. Crowds – I almost always prefer places where we will be mostly by ourselves, without a million other photographers and families next to us, vying for spots and distracting us from just being able to sink into the moment. I love locations where there is nobody else around – so that you don’t feel shy or uncomfortable, so that you and your kiddos can just focus on each other, and so that we have the freedom and flexibility to roam and explore and be ourselves during the session!

4. Background – okay, this one may seem obvious.. but what backgrounds draw you in the most? Is it somewhere with tall trees and lots of green? Is it somewhere with a river or lake in the background? Or is it somewhere more urban with building and bridges? Also, I find that it’s helpful to think about where you’re going to put these photos… if you’d love to have a fresh new canvas or framed print in your living room… what will look good in that space? What colors and backgrounds will go well with your decor? Also, what is most authentic to your family? Do you love nature, or is a cityscape more your style?
